Design

Obscura squeezes a bunch of powerful features into simple controls anyone can master. The interface balances aesthetics, ergonomics, and intuitiveness. You won’t want to use anything else. Controls can be reached with one thumb, and gestures and haptics combine to create a tactile experience that lets you stay focused on your subject.

Capture Modes & Formats

Obscura captures photos, videos, Live Photos, and portraits. Photos can be captured in RAW, ProRAW, HEIC, and JPEG (on supported devices, see http://obscura.camera/compatibility).

Capture images in multiple different aspect ratios, or apply filters live in camera for a wide variety of styles.

Camera Settings

Obscura gives you control over exposure, focus, white balance, ISO, shutter speed, and flash, with intuitive controls that make you feel in control of your device’s camera.

Live Filters

Obscura includes a bunch of great filters to give your photos instant style but you can also create your own and use them live in-camera. It’s very cool and very powerful.

View Options

Obscura lets you display a grid, a spirit level, a histogram, focus peaking, a focus loupe, and exposure clipping highlights to help you understand every detail of what you’re shooting.

Photo Library

Obscura has its own interface for browsing, rating, editing, and sharing images, but it’s fully integrated with your system photo library, so images captured with Obscura are available everywhere.

Obscura V is a huge update. The entire camera system has been improved, from how quickly it launches to how captures are saved in stages to be more reliable. There are a bunch of improvements that might not seem obvious at first, but you’ll feel them in use.

New Camera Modes
Obscura’s modes have been changed around a little:
- Photo Mode is now Fusion Mode, to more clearly demonstrate that it’s using a fusion camera system. (Fusion is hidden if your device only has a single rear camera)
- Live Photo Mode is no more! You can take Live Photos in Fusion and Manual Mode.
- There’s a new Macro Mode, if your device has an ultrawide camera.

Camera Controls
Obscura’s incredible camera controls have been tweaked to be even easier to use one handed, offering larger dials and improved quick settings.

Filters
Obscura’s whole image processing system has been completely revamped. Building on the photo editing tools built for Obscura Studio, filters are now comprised of those same editing parameters. This means:

You can now create Custom Filters and use them live in-camera!

It’s an incredibly flexible and powerful system, allowing for more personalization than ever before. You can find your own style and apply it consistently across images.

Library
Obscura’s Library interface has also been improved, you can now perform batch actions, and the album picker is even nicer than before.

Photo Editing
Obscura now has all the great Editing features and tools from Obscura Studio built right in and your edits are synced between both apps and across devices. This makes it a breeze to capture a photo on your phone, start editing it, move to your iPad and continue where you left off.

Ben 2026.2 Sep 14 Apologies for the lack of updates over the past year. I’ve been working hard on a major revision of Obscura while also juggling work on a new app, Indigo. It was hard to find the right balance, but going forward, Obscura will be getting much more attention. Stay tuned.

Getting all this working was a huge amount of work over the summer, so I hope you enjoy it. I think it really elevates the experience of using Obscura, and I hope even more people make it their default camera app.
